New Orleans

Thanks to my husband’s Southwest Companion pass, I recently joined him on a business trip to New Orleans. I just had to pay the taxes of $11.20. This was the first time I had done exactly what I wanted to do on a trip and not planning around the needs or wants of others and it was FANTASTIC.

On my first day, I explored the city on foot. I ended up at the Sazerac House. A free museum in New Orleans that explains the history of Sazerac a local spirit. The museum is extremely well done and to add to the fun you can get three mini samples of different cocktails. Two of the three were a hit with me. The best thing about the self-guided tour is completely free.

I love Cajun & Creole food so on my 2nd day I booked a food tour via Viator. Since I was exploring the city alone this was the perfect way to a few different places without me trying to do it alone.

As we walked to the different restaurants we learned a lot about the history of New Orleans. As a Southerner, I was surprised at how much I learned. Our first stop was for a chicken po’boy. This was followed by gumbo at the next stop. Our 3rd stop was Jambalaya. We ended our tour with a praline from the oldest candy store in New Orleans. Everything was perfect. It was fun trying so many different area specialties.

I really enjoyed exploring New Orleans alone. I never once felt unsafe roaming the streets in the tourist areas.

Of course no trip to New Orleans is complete with a stop at Cafe Du Monde. We ended up there after dinner one night and fresh beignets were the perfect ending to our night. It was crowded but we quickly found a table and ordered. They only take cash so be prepared!
