Southwest Companion Pass

I talk a lot about the Southwest Companion pass so I thought I would try to explain what it is and why I love it so much! My October trip is courtesy of the Companion Pass. My husband is speaking at a conference in New Orleans in October. His work provided his plane ticket and I added mine courtesy of the Companion Pass. I only had to pay taxes and fees 5.60 each way.

Back in June, he was speaking at a conference in Oklahoma City. I had never been to Oklahoma so I added myself as a companion. I had the best time wandering OKC while he worked. I was able to visit the Oklahoma City Memorial. It was so nice to go to a city and do my own thing.

Thanks to being able to change my companion 3x a year. I took my youngest on two cruises with his airfare free as my companion. I then switched it to my sister so she flew free to Miami for our cruise and last but not least it has been my oldest since then. We took advantage and did our weekend in Mobile followed by our cruise from Miami. It got used a lot this year.

My husband and I both have the companion pass on our Southwest Cards. We earned these last year. I love that you can have a companion fly free with you whether you pay for your ticket with real money or points. You can change your companion 3x times a year. It is simple to do. You can call or I usually just get on Facebook Messenger and have them do it for me.

How do you get the Companion pass?

You need 135,000 points or 100 paid flights. The points can come from a combination of places. You can get them from paid flights on Southwest or you can get them through credit card sign-up bonuses. Last year, I got the Southwest Credit Card and the Southwest Business Card. With the signup bonus for both cards, I got the companion pass for this year completely free. We have used it so much! The points you earn in the Southwest shopping portal also go towards the companion pass.

Southwest sometimes does promotions for free companion passes too.
