New Semester New Card

My son is a sophomore at the local University. Even though we have a 529 to cover all his academic expenses. I charge everything to our credit card and then get reimbursed. A new semester is about to begin and we got his bill yesterday. Our out-of-pocket is relatively low thanks to generous scholarships but with books and tuition, it still adds up quickly. I decided this was the perfect time to get a new card to get a sign-up bonus.

I looked at a lot of cards. I finally decided on the Captial One Venture X. It has a $395 annual fee, but I have had this card before and thought it was time to get it again, especially with a sign-up bonus. I also know I get more than the $395 back on this card easily and quickly. Check out the Capital One Venture X here.

Here is what I like about this card:

I get a sign-up bonus of 75,000 points after spending $4000 in 3 months.

I receive a $300 travel credit per year when booking through Capital One Travel

$100 Global Entry or TSA precheck credit

Also as someone who travels often. I love a good airport lounge. Capital One has some amazing lounges that you and two guests can get for free with this card! Our family spent 3 amazing hours at the Capital One Lounge in Denver this past March. We ate drank and laughed all away from the hustle and bustle of the busy gates.

Most importantly I think this card will help me as I plan one of our trips for 2025. We usually ski for spring break. Thanks to two kids attending a local University I have very little flexibility when this trip will happen. I will most likely book our flights on Southwest. The room is harder. We have done this before on points staying at places like Park Hyatt Beaver Creek but we now need 2 rooms so I am thinking less expensive resort. I am hoping the 75,000 points I get as a spending bonus plus the $300 travel credit can be used toward this trip. I am still working on this so I might go another direction entirely but I think this will help in getting that trip down in cost.

Skiing is an expensive hobby so I always put our downpayment down for Epic Passes around Memorial Day. We only get to get about 4 days a year but buying the Epic 4-day passes saves us significant money on lift tickets.
